The Republic of Ireland is the larger, southernmost part of the island of Ireland which is, somewhat confusingly, both officially and commonly called just Ireland. The island has been divided politically into two states since 1920. The remainder of this shared island is Northern Ireland, which is a devolved part of the United Kingdom.
